Types of Diecast Vehicles
 
If you've accumulated a few collectible toy trucks and are considering expanding your collection, you should consider whether your interests are confined exclusive to model toy trucks or if you also want to collect, for example, die-cast cars. Some people like to specialize, while others have a broader interest in diecast vehicles. It's best to decide ahead of time what your collection will encompass before you wind up with 3000 toys, only 100 of which really thrill you. You definitely don't want to create a toy truck city and then decide only motor city classics will do.
 
Brands of Toy Trucks
 
Again, it's time to ask yourself a question: Do you want to limit your collection to a single brand of collectible diecast toy trucks, like Tonka toy trucks or toy Ford trucks, or do you enjoy collecting all brands of toy trucks? If you're giving a diecast toy truck as a gift, it's important to learn whether or not the collector in your life has a brand preference. Perhaps he or she collects only Sunstar toy trucks, First Gear toy trucks, Caterpillar (also known as "CAT") toy trucks, New Ray toy trucks, or Tonkin toy trucks. If so, make sure you purchase a diecast toy truck that will fit his or her collection.
 
Scales of Toy Trucks
 
Similar to model trains, diecast toy trucks and cars come in a variety of scales. Typically, the scales are as follows: 1:18, 1:24, 1:43, and 1:64. Some people prefer to collect only one scale of diecast toy trucks, while other's hobbies incorporate collecting a variety of scales.
 
Cataloguing a Collection
 
One of the challenges that many collectors face - particularly after they've been collecting diecast toy trucks for several years - is that they don't remember exactly what they have. Collectors have come up with a variety of methods for cataloging their collections. The earlier you start cataloging, the better off you'll be. If you're looking for a gift for your favorite collector, supplying him or her with the tools necessary to catalog his or her collection is a great idea.
 
One idea for cataloging is to buy a "milk crate" type of box and color-coded folders at an office supply store. You can create a folder for each item in your collection, and include receipts, photos, the owner's registration, and so forth in the folder. If you have a variety of types of diecast toy trucks, you can use color-coded folders to separate them by type. Another method of cataloging is to buy one or more binders and sheet protectors, and create one sheet for each item in your collection, and keep them together in a binder.
 
Collecting diecast toy trucks is fun and rewarding. Adding to your collection, receiving toy trucks as gifts, and trading or selling items from your collection can provide you with hours of enjoyment.

Diecast toy vehicles didn't really become popular until the Matchbox line was introduced in 1947. Matchbox made the vehicles with more detail and modeled them after particular vehicles of the time. Mattell decided to enter the diecast toy car field in 1968 and the world of diecast changed completely.
 
The first diecast cars manufactured by Mattel are known by collectors as the sweet sixteen. These vehicles were an immediate hit with little boys and grownup boys as well. They were modeled after the popular muscle cars right down to the red stripe on the tire. These redline tires were standard on Hot Wheels until 1977. The redline era Hot Wheels are a very hot collectible.
 
While almost everyone has heard of Matchbox and Hot Wheels, there are lots of other brands of diecast toy cars that are popular with collectors. Topper Toys produced the Johnny Lightening line of diecast cars. These vehicles weren't as big on style as the Hot Wheels cars, but instead focused on speed.
 
Ertl is another manufacturer of diecast vehicles. Their niche in the diecast market is tractors and farm equipment. Most little boys that like tractors have played with a few that were made by Ertl.
 
There is a long list of other companies that have produced or still produce diecast replicas of various kinds of vehicles, some more popular than others. For collectors the allure is often nostalgia, for little boys it's the fun. Whatever the reason you are interested in diecast toy vehicles, you won't have a hard time finding them.

Die-Cast Truck Types
 
While some people collect strictly one type of die-cast vehicle, there are a wide range of vehicle types available. Some collectors focus on antique trucks, and others like to collect trucks from a single manufacturer. Others may focus strictly on a type of truck, such as 18-wheelers, and others may have an interest in farm vehicles or construction equipment. It's important to decide what sort of truck you are most interested in, so you can focus your research and purchasing.
 
Die-Cast Truck Manufacturers
 
There are many different manufacturers of die-cast trucks. Some of these manufacturers include:
 
· Norscott - Norscott is the primary manufacturer of Caterpillar die-cast construction equipment, as well as other brands such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Case, Claas, Bell, Liebherr and Yale/Hyster.
 
· Ertl - Ertl is one of the oldest die-cast truck manufacturers. Ertl's primary focus is on farm equipment, and manufactures John Deere and Case/New Holland farm vehicles.
 
· Tonkin - Tonkin focuses on road trucks, primarily 18-wheelers, but their collection also includes log trucks and dump trucks.
 
· New Ray - New Ray Trucks also focus on road trucks, including 18-wheelers and pickup trucks, but their collection also includes specialty trucks such as garbage trucks and tanker trucks.
 
· Yatming - Yatming is a Hong Kong company that manufactures a wide line of fire trucks and police vehicles, in addition to its automobile lines.
 
· Corgi - Corgi is a British manufacturer that specializes in branded trucks and limited edition collectable vehicles.
 
· Tonka - Tonka trucks were manufactured more strictly as toys than many die-cast trucks made today. Tonka is currently owned by Hasbro, and now licenses the Tonka name to Maisto for die-cast vehicles. Today's Tonka trucks include pickup trucks, farm tractors, big rigs and branded trucks.
 
Die-Cast Truck Scales
 
A scale refers to the ratio of the size of the model truck to the size of the actual truck. The primary scales for die-cast vehicles are 1:18, 1:24, 1:43, and 1:64. In a 1:18 scale truck, one inch on the die-cast truck translates to 18 inches on the actual truck. Some collectors prefer one scale of die-cast toy trucks, while other's collect trucks from a variety of scales.
 
Resources for Die-Cast Truck Collectors
 
The majority of resources for die-cast truck collectors are web sites created by die-cast truck manufacturers and sites developed by other collectors. While manufacturer web sites can easily be found with a simple search, it is more difficult to locate non-manufacturer resources.

    The "Matchbox" diecast appeared on the market in 1947. These toys became very popular and the name "Matchbox" was used regardless of who the actual manufacturer was. Lesney began making the 1-75 series that year. The series name came from the fact that there were 75 different vehicles in the line, each packaged in a small box designed to look like those used for matches.
     
    In the 1950s collecting diecast cars trucks started to become a more popular past time. As a result, more companies entered the field, including the Corgi brand, produced by Mettoy, which appeared in 1956. This brand led the industry in new features like the use of interiors and clear plastic windows.
     
    Marketers started to realize in the 1960s that children could influence a family's decision as to what products to buy. Leveraging this notion they began to use diecast vehicles as promotional tools to help push their advertising. This can still be seen today. In 1968, Hot Wheels were introduced in the United States by Mattel, to address the complaint that they had no line of toys for boys to balance their line of Barbie dolls for girls. Because they looked fast and were fast (they were equipped with a low-friction wheel/axle assembly), Hot Wheels quickly gained an important niche in the diecast toy market, becoming one of the world's top sellers and challenging the Matchbox 1-75 series in popularity.
     
    By the mid '70s it seemed like everyone wanted to get onto producing diecast vehicles. Marketers realized that adults were buying many of the vehicles as collectibles and not just as toys for their children. Many companies like Sears Roebuck, Kodak and McDonald's commissioned the production of promotional models.Commercial replicas stared to take over the market. Matchbox was producing diecast toy trucks with Coca-Cola, Colman's Mustard, and Cerebos Salt logos and paint schemes. Corgi expanded on this idea in the early '80s by producing more than 50 versions of a 1920s era Thornycroft van.
     
    Despite all the momentum from marketers to produce diecast replicas the economic environment forced Meccano (Dinky), Matchbox, and Corgi to file bankruptcy. There was a shift in production from Europe to China at this time. Many of the brand names were sold and then resold.
     
    The 1990s brought with it a increase in demand for diecast largely do to the number of vehicles inspired by racing-related Nascar diecast trucks and cars in the US. These featured different racing teams, sponsors and even equipment used.
     
    Today we enjoy a very diverse array of vehicles from cars, trucks, buses, agricultural implements, construction equipment, diecast aircraft and military models. The variety and scale you can get is endless. Although most of the original companies are no longer around diecast continues to thrive.

This can have a good deal to do with the amount of space you have to devote to your collection. With 1:64 scale trucks you can easily assembly a very large gathering. It is also very easy to build a diorama that can accommodate all your trucks without taking up too much room. If you would rather go for larger trucks then you might consider a 1:24 scale or thereabouts. You cannot build quite as involved a diorama as with the smaller scale trucks but they do make for some interesting small scale scenes. You can also add more detail to these than you can with the smaller scale dioramas.

    Currently the large scale model trucks seem to be the most popular ones with the serious collectors. With the amount of detail that is available with this size model truck collectors seem to be snapping them up left and right. Some of the details available include working steering columns, functional suspension systems, and detailed exhaust systems. As you go smaller in scale you lose more detail. One step down and you may lose the functional steering. Another step may see the loss of working doors and tailgates. The smallest may only have working wheels.
     
    Back in the thirties a company named Dinky Toys began the push to create die cast models. They started production in 1934 and most were only 1:43 scale. Matchbox came into being in the mid fifties. Their vehicles were mostly 1:64 in scale. Due to manufacturing shortcomings of the day most of these had no working parts at all. With advancements in manufacturing came the improvement of models. Soon manufacturers were able to produce these die cast model trucks at a decent pace. Many began to include working parts soon after.
     
    One way that you might choose to collect die cast trucks is by joining a model truck club. With many available to join there is no shortage of choices. It doesn't matter if you live in the United States, the UK or abroad, there are many of these clubs out there. Many of these clubs offer different benefits. They may be organized by the particular automakers model. These clubs are also excellent sources of information. If you have questions on where to find a certain model truck you have been looking for. The one thing you must know before you decide to join is exactly what scale of model you are wanting to collect. Once you know this then you will be able to pick a club that caters to that particular scale model.
